Lycopsid

Lycopsid, common name for any mosslike vascular plant in the phylum that contains the club mosses, spike mosses, quillworts, and many extinct orders. Lycopsids are vascular plants with small, simple leaves. Spore-producing bodies, when present, are borne at the base of the upper side of the leaf. Tree-sized lycopods made up much of the forests of the Carboniferous period, but present-day species are small plants often mistaken for unrelated mosses and seedling conifers. Scientific classification: Lycopsids make up the phylum Lycopodiophyta. related articles: Tracheophytes reproduction moss ferns
